Mobile Water Purifiers installed in different affected areas in CDO

A Solarized clean water treatment system was successfully installed in Water Production Well No.8 of the Cagayan de Oro Water District (COWD) located in Barangay Nazareth. It is serving 436 liters/hour of drinking water in the area. One concern is that security of the system component. We were able to move the system inside the steel covered room except for the solar panel.Security is only available 6:00 pm - 6:00 am. SLB coordinated this concern to Brgy. Captain Bebot but we received no reply as of the moment. Giovanni Tampus of the Biology Department was able to test the water taken at Water Production Well No. 8 in Barangay Nazareth and the result is zero growth of coli form bacteria (MPN index/100ml): 0.

Engr. Jun Granada, Mr. Nino Uy, and the rest of the team were able to meet with Ms. Rachel Beja, General Manager of Cagayan de Oro Water District regarding mobile water distribution. COWD shared to us their listing of areas without water or those without any delivery schedule. And according to Ms. Carol Lao, in-charge of distribution and mobilization of water, they appreciate the help that the relief operations is giving them. The COWD's priority is providing water to the evacuation centers and the local government will be mobilizing fire trucks to other affected areas. Those unserved areas will be the areas where relief operations will deliver water. Dr. Dietmar through Ms. May of Del Monte Phil. pledged to give and deliver water through their water tanks with a 3,000-liter capacity starting 23 December 2011. Ms. Carol Lao through Mr. Boy Linaac will provide us with possible route for the water tank tomorrow as well. Our recommendation on Puritabs donated by UNICEF is that it needs to be seen for the verification of the item and possible recommendations on its use.

The team also coordinated with MWSS and COWD regarding the state of the art “dirty water to clean water" treatment facilities which are arriving 23 December 2011. COWD suggested three sites which the team in turn made an ocular inspection: Burgos-Pacana, Vamenta Carmen, and Balulang. After the inspection, Burgos-Pacana area proved to be feasible. The concern for Vamenta Carmen is the seeming difficulty of access of the equipment as evacuees have settled on the road going to the river. The river will be the source of water to be filtered by the treatment facilities of MWSS. This will be coordinated with the Barangay Captain. If we are not successful in clearing the way for the treatment equipment we may locate it beside the existing equipment of MWSS at Ilaya Carmen (bridge near the rotunda). In Balulang, a Water Production there is already serving water to the area.

Mr. Philip Tan through Mr. Chanito Jagonal of the Church of Latter Day Saints delivered and served 4,000 liters of water to the evacuation center in Bulua. After, they delivered again to Iponan.

DOH had a meeting earlier with XU relief operations representative Ms. Ana Miso regarding Sanitation. The concern raised was that there are no water tanks in the evacuation center to provide water in the rest rooms for better sanitation.
